Middle School Education and Instruction

Our music curriculum for grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 is structured in accordance with the Ministry of National Education (MEB) standards. All activities and studies conducted throughout the year serve as preparation for advanced music programs.

Starting in grade 5, students continue working with the instruments they have chosen until the end of grade 8.

Our Goals

We aim to ensure that students:

• Grow into individuals who value art and culture, are inquisitive, and can distinguish high-quality music

• Develop skills in musical games, listening, creativity, rhythm, body language, and music notation

• Understand the importance of culture, art, and music in human and social life

• Develop an interest in the contemporary applications of music technology

• Participate in suitable music ensembles with their voices and instruments, and receive support to take part in both school and extracurricular events

Our Aim

Our goal is to nurture our students’ creativity and originality, enabling them to produce works within the principles of aesthetics. We strive to raise individuals who possess universal values, can understand and analyze the development of art history from past to present, and are sensitive to contemporary art events. Throughout this process, we provide opportunities for students to express themselves using a wide variety of materials and support their personal development by incorporating group work into our activities.

The Visual Arts curriculum is structured in accordance with the Ministry of National Education (MEB) program under three learning domains:

• Art Criticism and Aesthetics

• Cultural Heritage

What We Do

Student Personal Exhibitions
We provide opportunities for students who have an interest in visual arts and produce works in this field to hold their own exhibitions. To be eligible, students must actively participate in art lessons, create original and creative works in line with artistic criteria, and continue their studies both inside and outside school. In this way, we aim for our students to set an example for their peers and make art a part of their lives.

Cartoon Event
Our annual cartoon event, which holds a special place in our art department activities, is one of the projects where students combine their drawing skills with their thinking processes. Each year, the event is held around a specific theme. Discussions and workshops planned with guest cartoonists draw attention to the art of caricature, while also helping our students gain a universal perspective.

Art Festival / Biennial
Our annual and now traditional Art Festival is held across all grade levels. In a fun and inspiring environment, students come together with different fields and artists within the visual arts, expressing themselves through creative designs during the event process.

Artists at School
Every one to two months, we host artists who work in fields such as painting, sculpture, ceramics, and photography at our school for a day each week. This experience allows our students to observe every stage of an artist’s creative process and learn through direct engagement. In addition, interviews and workshops with the artists help make the acquired artistic knowledge permanent.

Aims

The Technology and Design program aims for students to acquire the following knowledge and skills:

• Explain, based on evidence, Atatürk’s emphasis on science and technology

• Create an original product using various media sources for effective information presentation

• Present a concept related to the content through modeling, simulation, or concept mapping

• Use digital resources in collaborative working environments

• Apply effective presentation design and techniques appropriately to their purpose

• Use digital tools for personal data and time management

• Transform personal goals into tangible works and projects by using information tools and resources in interdisciplinary studies

• Use different digital tools to access, organize, and evaluate information

• Evaluate the accuracy, reliability, and impartiality of information shared in online sources according to its type

• Make predictions, develop strategies, and evaluate decisions when solving a problem

• Develop strategies to solve basic hardware and software problems

• Create an algorithm by defining instructions for the computer in a sequential order

• Discuss topics and implications related to the proper and responsible use of technology

• Discuss the future impact of technology on society

The Design course aims for students to use information technology tools and resources to develop solutions to problems they encounter in daily life. The curriculum, enriched with design thinking, problem-solving, and algorithmic thinking skills and knowledge, ensures that our students:

• Understand the requirements of being a digital citizen

• Create products using word processing, graphic, spreadsheet, drawing, and presentation programs appropriately to their purpose

• Develop multimedia products suited to their purpose by interpreting a visual material design

• Begin coding using visual programming languages, write their own code, or remix existing code

At the 5th–6th grade level, students develop physical interfaces for the applications they create.
At the 7th–8th grade level, students learn 3D Modeling and Arduino.

Aims

The Modern Foreign Languages German–Spanish Program aims for students to acquire the following knowledge and skills:

• To develop proficiency in the four language skills: reading comprehension, writing, speaking, and listening

• To understand familiar expressions and simple sentences commonly used in everyday language

• To communicate on familiar topics when speech is slow, clear, and simple

• To speak using basic structures about themselves, their education, etc., and to express themselves regarding their immediate surroundings and daily needs

German–Spanish Course:

The Modern Foreign Languages Program, prepared for students in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8, focuses on introducing and developing a new language using a communication-based approach. According to this approach, speaking Spanish and German in the classroom is of great importance. Using Spanish/German as the language of instruction allows students to easily develop strong communication skills. Our main goal is to equip students with listening, reading comprehension, speaking, and writing skills. Students learn by doing, experimenting, and actively participating in the learning process.

They acquire the vocabulary and sentence structures necessary to express themselves simply in the new language. Another aim is to help students discover a new culture through its songs, celebrations, and literature. As the world becomes increasingly globalized, it is inevitable that our students will encounter different languages and cultures in their daily lives. Thus, learning a new language is becoming ever more important for our students to be active citizens in this global world.

The Middle School English Program serves as a bridge from primary school to high school. It prepares students for the challenges they will face as they progress from a communication-based level to a level of academic skills. Our goal is to develop our students’ ability to speak English fluently and accurately, bringing them to the highest level they can achieve. Particular emphasis is placed on developing reading and writing skills. In reading, students learn to comprehend, interpret, and analyze texts. In writing, they are introduced to various genres, with equal importance given to both content and process.

The aims of the Middle School English Program are as follows:

• To enable students to participate in conversations in order to exchange information, express their feelings, and convey their opinions on various topics fluently

• To read and respond to different types of texts using a range of skills and strategies

• To produce well-structured texts using the standard rules of English

• To analyze the universal themes and techniques used by authors

The Social Sciences Department of Özel Fen Middle School embraces the vision of reflecting changes and developments occurring on both national and global scales into its educational program.

Our primary goal is to raise students who are equipped with fundamental democratic values, respectful of human rights, sensitive to their environment, critical and creative thinkers, capable of making sound decisions, possessing well-developed social participation skills, understanding methods of producing scientific knowledge, and being active, productive individuals who know and exercise their rights and responsibilities in social life.

In line with these goals, we:

Aims

In grades 5–8, science lessons aim for students to acquire the following knowledge and skills:

As scientifically literate individuals, our students:

• Research, inquire, make decisions through logical reasoning, think creatively, solve problems, are self-confident, open to collaboration, able to express themselves, and entrepreneurial; they learn with an awareness of sustainable development throughout life

• Possess knowledge, skills, positive attitudes, moral and national values related to science

• Understand the connections between science, engineering, technology, society, and the environment

• Are equipped with the skills to explore the natural environment and live in harmony with it

• Respect cultural and universal values and are sensitive to social issues

• Integrate science with other disciplines and are inclined to transform their theoretical knowledge and skills into practice and tangible products

• Understand and apply scientific methods while exploring natural phenomena

• Evaluate and synthesize scientific ideas, solve problems, perform accurate analysis and calculations, and present results appropriately

• Use scientific terminology correctly and express scientific concepts in English

In the Science Department, we aim to instill these qualities in our students through laboratory work, group activities, and the use of scientific research steps. Differentiated activities aimed at understanding and learning are implemented during project work. Visual materials are used to help students reinforce the concepts they have learned. In addition, many websites and applications are used in lessons for the purpose of discovery and experimentation.

Our departmental work also includes supporting students who struggle in science lessons while advancing successful students to the next level, and assisting those who wish to prepare for national and international science competitions.

Aims

In grades 5–8, mathematics lessons aim to help our students acquire the following skills:

• To foster a love of mathematics and spark curiosity

• To develop basic mathematical operations and algebra skills

• To equip students with the mathematical skills necessary to analyze, model, and interpret events they encounter or may encounter in daily life, enabling them to make sound decisions

• To ensure they know and correctly use the language of mathematics

• To build the skills needed to access mathematical resources and use them appropriately

• To enable them to use current technology at an advanced level in support of learning mathematics

• To encourage openness to change and innovation

• To develop disciplined study habits

• To promote rational and critical thinking through analysis

• To support students who struggle in mathematics while advancing successful students to the next level

• To assist students who wish to prepare for national and international mathematics competitions

• To help them establish connections between mathematics, other subjects, and daily life

Our school participates every year in national and international mathematics competitions with our students.

In our lessons, we aim to develop our students’ knowledge, skills, and behaviors so they can lead physically active, balanced, and healthy lifestyles. By providing active learning opportunities, we help them improve their problem-solving, application, and cooperation skills—both individually and as a team—while fostering an understanding of similarities and differences. We also aim to make acquired sports skills a lifelong habit.

In Physical Education lessons, our students:

• Understand the importance of doing sports

• Gain fundamental knowledge, skills, and behavioral habits related to sports

• Know the rules of basic sports branches

• Can follow a sport of interest in their daily lives

• Participate in competitions and tournaments related to sports learned at school

• Understand healthy nutrition and its importance

• Establish the link between nutrition and sports

• Know basic hygiene rules

• Have the knowledge to ensure their own and others’ safety while doing sports

• Understand the concept of fair play in games and competitions

• Demonstrate sportsmanship by congratulating winners and accepting losses
